In co-op, the whole game changes: instead of one build trying to do everything, you get to specialise and let teammates cover what you cannot. The fastest way to fail is to bring a squad of the same glass-cannon build that all die to the same mechanic. The winning move is role coverage — make sure each player answers a different problem.
A reliable squad divides into four broad jobs: a front-line holder who soaks attention, a damage dealer who deletes targets, a control player who slows the field, and a support who keeps everyone's abilities and recovery flowing. This guide maps each role to the real builds on this site and explains how they combine.
The golden rule applies at every team size: cover your bases before you stack damage. One player who can take a hit, one who can clear fast, and one who can control a crowd will clear content far more comfortably than four players who each built the exact same high-risk damage setup.
The Front-Line Holder
The front-line role uses a Defense-heavy setup — the Sturdy & Guardian Tank — to sit in the thick of a fight and take the pressure that would delete squishier teammates. Its job is not maximum kills; it is keeping danger pointed somewhere the team can survive.
Items like Beast's Heart (flat Defense) and White Crust Bread (invincibility on taking damage) make the front-liner extremely hard to remove, and Rock Elephant turns that high Defense into real damage so the holder contributes more than just body presence. The rest of the squad then gets space to do their jobs without dodging everything.
The Damage Dealer
The damage role is where the fight ends. Two strong routes fit here: a Precision Critical build that floods a tablet board and deletes single high-value targets through stacked crits, or an Ember Burn build that applies relentless damage-over-time and melts tanky bosses while the rest of the team stays mobile.
Whichever one you pick, the key in co-op is focus. A damage build shines when the team funnels its output onto the same threat, so the dealer should be comfortable calling the primary target and sticking to it rather than spreading hits across the whole room.
The Control Player
Control is the quiet multiplier of a good squad. A Glacier/Frost setup applies Frostbite to slow enemies into a manageable pack, and a Storm Cloud build layers area lightning on top. When the front-line holds enemies together, the control player's slowdown makes that cluster far easier to delete.
Control also buys the damage dealer time. A Frostbitten boss cannot punish mistakes, which means the team's burst lands in a wide, safe window instead of risking greedy trades. In a coordinated squad, control can be the difference between a clean clear and a wipe.
The Support and Ability Engine
The support role keeps the team's rotation alive. An Academy Grimoire build (Empty Hilt, Rylie's Pocket Watch) shortens ability cooldowns and smooths MP economy so the damage and control players can use their skills far more often.
A Shadow Evasion setup can also fill this space in a different way — its cooldown refunds on evasion (Academy Fountain Pen) mean a player who dodges well becomes a mobile engine that keeps abilities flowing. The common thread is that support players make everyone else's build perform above its solo ceiling.
Composing the Squad
For the most reliable clears, build around one front-line holder, one damage dealer, one control player, and one support. Add a second damage dealer instead of a second tank or control — more than one front-line holder usually means the team is slow to kill things.
Coordination matters more than the exact builds. Agree on a primary target, call out dangerous boss tells, and let the control player set up a crowd before the damage dealer commits. When every role is doing its own job and covering the others' weaknesses, the combined team clears content that would stop any of them solo.

Pro Tips
- Cover the roles before stacking damage — a balanced squad out-cleans four of the same build.
- One front-line holder is enough; add a second damage dealer instead.
- Let control set up a slowed crowd before the damage dealer commits.
- Focus the same primary target; scattered output wastes the team's burst.
- Support keeps everyone's cooldowns and MP flowing — underrate it and the squad stalls.
- Call out boss tells so the front-line and control can react together.
